What is a CBCT Scan?

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) takes x-ray images to the next level, providing greater detail and 3D images not possible with traditional x-rays. When standard x-rays do not give enough detail, a CBCT scanner not only provides more explicit, sharper images, but a three-dimensional representation of the oral structures not possible with other x-rays. This 3D panoramic technology also shows the nerve paths and soft tissues of the mouth, which do not show clearly in 2D x-rays. With CBCT scanner images, Dr. Firouzeh can plan treatment protocols with greater precision. A CBCT scanner’s 3D panoramic imaging is similar to that obtained from a traditional CT scan but exposes patients to less radiation.

How Does CBCT Technology Work?

CBCT scans are painless and quick. Patients sit or stand while an armature rotates around their heads. The armature supports the x-ray cone and detector on opposite sides, turning them together to capture multiple, rapid images. The scan takes hundreds of 2D images that are then digitally combined to create a 3D image. We can view your oral cavity and skull structure from multiple angles and zoom in on areas of concern for detailed, high-resolution information.

How are Cone Beam CT Scans Performed?

A dental cone beam CT is unlike a traditional, claustrophobic CT scan. Our CBCT scanner rotates around your head while sitting or standing. Although you must remain still during the procedure, you are not enclosed in a CT machine. The imaging process takes less than a minute for a complete image of the craniofacial region. Images of specific areas can take as little as ten seconds.
